Wood Board Repair

Wood Board Repair

Unless the damage is extensive, wood board repair can be DIY-ed without much difficulty and effort. Wood boards, including solid wooden panels, particle boards, and plywood on walls, floor, or shelves and drawers of storage units, can be worn down by friction, scratched, dented, or have their protective coating peeling away. And, compared to kitchen cabinet repair, drawer repair, window repair, and door repair–all of which are specific in what they cover–wooden boards have quite a range of applications and can be damaged in many different ways. Read on and find out what’s behind the most common wood board repair issues and how the corresponding fixes are usually done.

Damaged Plywood

Plywood is often cheap and easily replaceable. Instead of repairing damaged plywood, consider just buying a new piece. Just measure, mark out, and then use a saw to cut the part that you need from the new piece of plywood.

Cracked or split plywood can always be repaired but the structural integrity of this type of wood board is already permanently compromised. If the plywood is only used as cabinet wall siding, a small shelf component, or on any light furniture that’s not intended for serious load bearing purposes, then there’s really no problem in repairing cracked or split plywood. To fix damaged plywood, fill in the gouged-out part of the plywood with epoxy resin, putty, or wood filler. Use a spatula to apply evenly. Blend in thoroughly and run fine-grade sandpaper to roughen out the filled-out area of the plywood as well as the rest of the wood board. Clean the residue and apply your desired wood stain finishing.

Water-Damaged Wood Beams

If the wood beam is not rotted away, it is still salvageable with the use of suitable filler material. Use a chisel or any appropriate tool to remove the part of the wooden beam that has rotted away due to water seepage. Fill the gap with sealant such as epoxy resin or wood filler. Use a spatula to even out the application of sealant material with the rest of the wood beam. Wait for the wood filler to dry and then gently run fine-grade sandpaper over the wood beam, including the newly repaired area. Clean any residue from the sandpapering and apply primer. Wait for the primer to dry before you apply a fresh coat of paint. Do at least two paint coatings to help protect the wooden beam from water damage.

All in all, the wood board repair process is pretty much straightforward. You use suitable resin or filler material to mend the cracks, holes, and chewed-out sections, run sandpaper to lightly roughen the entire wood board, apply primer, and then apply your choice of wood finishing–whether it’s varnish, stain, or paint. As long as the wood board is not a structural component, you can safely repair it. Otherwise, it is best to seek professional help from an experienced handyman or carpenter.
